County Government of Busia

"Gateway to East and Central Africa"

Kenya and Ugandan delegations held a two-day workshop at Tororo Rock Classic Hotel in Uganda aimed at strengthening Coronavirus (Covid-19) surveillance at Points of Entries (POEs) and within Border Communities.

With informal points proving difficult to close, participants resolved that there is need to strengthen border screening, improve preparedness measures at designated POEs through strengthening capacity for early detection, confirmation , reporting and referral of suspected cases to designated isolation facilities.

The onset of Covid -19 saw President Yoweri Museveni institute various measures including border restrictions in an effort to limit transmission; only cargo trucks with essential items and migrants exiting the country were allowed to cross after being subjected to mandatory testing.

Busia Kenya delegation which was led by Deputy County Secretary, Evalyne Ikwii also included Infectious disease specialist Wycliffe Moracha and County Disease Surveillance Officer, Evans Shiraku.
The cross border meeting co-sponsored by IOM UN Migration and Human Assistance and Development Services (HADs) was also attended by officials from Ministry of Health, Uganda and border agencies including Kenya and Uganda Revenue Authorities and Red Cross.
