Department of Water, Environment, Irrigation & Natural Resources

MODERN WATER DRILLING RIG

It has come with a powerful camera to be used in monitoring, drilling and borehole maintenance; it also comes with a support truck to carry accessories.  The machine was procured at a cost of Sh40m via contributions from MCAs Sh35m and County Government Sh5m

ABILITY OF THE RIG:

  • It can drill up to 400m depth
  • Use bits of 6 to 12 inches
  • Has a maximum hammer of force of 10,000kgs.
  • Has a mud pump to be used in difficult soil formation.
  • Has a built in welding machine.
  • Powerful Compressor of pressure 12000psi
  • Has a water and mud pump.

IMPACT:

  • Will help improve water quality
  • Increase volumes of production
  • Increase water access across the county
  • Reduce cost of Operation and Maintenance

  • MUNDIKA HYBRID WATER SYSTEM

The operationalization of the Mundika  hybrid system that entails pumping water using solar during day and electricity at night  has borne fruit for town residents who could go without water for a couple of days due to power cuts owing to unpaid power bills.

The Sh45m project funded by the World Bank through the Kenya Devolution Support Programme (KDSP) also entailed rehabilitation of the water works, revenue automation and repair of damaged pipes for Busia Water and Sewerage Services Company (BUWASSCO).

The hybrid system is now the way to go for the County Government in order to cut on annual electricity bills that amounts to about Sh300 million from its water schemes across the county.

Mundika project is now meeting its initial design of covering 7,500 households; it was only serving 2,500 households.

The Sh20m hybrid system was undertaken by Davis and Shirtliff; another Sh20m towards revenue automation of the Water Company and Sh5m for repairs and rehabilitation on the damaged pipes that lay within service area for the company.

Mundika hybrid system is the first among many that the county government is rolling out across the county to cushion against skyrocketing electricity bills,  Butula water project is the second to be converted into hybrid system.

    IMPACT:

-About 65,000 people, an equivalent of 7,500 households, in Matayos and Teso South Sub Counties within Busia Municipality are now enjoying uninterrupted water supply from the Mundika Water scheme.

-The scheme used to attract a monthly bill of over Sh3 million, with the introduction of the new system the County Government of Busia is making a saving of 50 per cent in bills paid to Kenya Power and Lightning Company.

-The use of sun as an energy resource is gaining popularity because it can't be exhausted, it's freely and readily available and energy resources from the sun do not pollute the environment.

-The aerial view of modern solar panels at Mundika, that traps sunlight energy from the sun to produce solar electricity, is a confirmation of the county's commitment to embrace the hybrid system.

LOWER NZOIA IRRIGATION PROJECT
Construction of the Lower Nzoia Irrigation Project and rehabilitation of River Nzoia dykes are taking shape with rice farmers in Bunyala set to reap big from enlarged acreage under irrigation.
Busia County Government has seconded engineers to help the contractor Sino Hydro Corporation from China in the construction works of the Sh10 billion project.
The Chinese firm has been given the tender for the project. The works are to be completed in three to four years.
A new scheme — Sisenye Irrigation — will be established after the project is completed.
Only one scheme exists in Busia — the Bunyala Irrigation Scheme.
The project is expected to create thousands of jobs, especially for the youth. It will also improve the county’s food security. The new dykes will help control perennial floods.
Busia County, especially Budalang’i Sub County, frequently experiences flooding.
The annual disaster occurs when swollen River Nzoia rapidly bursts its banks during downpours, submerging dykes or due to Lake Victoria backflow.
Lives are usually lost and property is destroyed. There will be enough flood mitigation and control mechanisms in the area after the completion of the project.

Hand Pumps, shallow wells and Springs Protection

Besides having the  Solar Powered Boreholes as a flagship project, the department has also embarked on Spring protection ,rehabilitation of existing hand pumps as well as installation of new pumps, to help bridge the gap on matters clean and affordable water provision,

—SISENYE WATER SCHEME

Rehabilitation of Sisenye Water Network through Donor Partnership
Sisenye Water Scheme in Bunyala North Ward was initiated to alleviate water scarcity in the area despite being surrounded by Lake Victoria.
KIWASH in partnership with the County Government donated Sh30million for installation of the main line from the Lake to Busia Hills where main tank was constructed to deliver water via gravity.
To ensure more people get water, area MCA Fredrick Musirimba through the Ward based project set aside Sh16m for pipeline extension.
Lines have been installed at Budubusi, Kenya Gauze Primary, Busia Hills- Sifugwe- Nabongoli- Namunye- Budalangi – Mudembi market, California – Sirimba area.
Phase two that will cost Sh6m will go past Nabengele, Namalo, Rwambwa junction, and from Mudembi to Rwambwa junction. Already three kiosks have been put at Budubusi and one at Nambengele.
A total off our kiosks will be put up with water running to MMUST, Namakoli and Buhonya areas, and a standby pipe at Kanyagosi.
Phase one will realize 70 per cent water coverage with phase two to reach 90 per cent.

WATER BOWSERS

In a bid to manage the contingencies that arise as a result of water shortage,

the department has 3 fully functional water bowsers with a capacity of

15,000  litres each.

These bowsers have proven to be of great help to the community especially in areas with water shortage,  and special needs like funerals, weddings, and any other event.

ALEMA WATER PTROJECT

The solar hybrid pump in the Alema borehole pump house points to the numbers on the face of the pump, showing off how much energy the new solar panels are producing – more than the pump needs to operate.

The new pump sends water up 1.8 kilometres through steel water main pipes to a new 100-cubic-meter catchment tank on the Nangina hill above the borehole.

Water is distributed through gravity to deliver water to customers downhill. On a sunny day, that means this portion of the operation is essentially free.

The new pump, pipes and tank are all part of the Alema Water Project, collaboration between USAID’s Kenya Water Sanitation and Hygiene (KIWASH) project and the Busia County government to bring clean water to people of FunyulaSub County.

The Alema Borehole was constructed in 2015 but was sorely underutilized. Just one water kiosk was pulling from the borehole. During times of draught, people would sometimes wait in line all day at the kiosk to fill their cans.

The two water supply operators in the area, Manana and Onana Water Supply, faced water shortages: Manana Water pulled from the Manana Dam, which, due to increasing heat and longer dry seasons, ran dry in 2016; and Onana Water was only pulling water from one of its sources because the pump at the second source was broken.

In addition to the new pump, water main pipes and catchment tank, KIWASH constructed two new water kiosks. The county government is also increasing the existing reticulation network, connecting schools, homes and businesses directly to the Alema water supply.

The County Government has also increased the pumping capacity of Manana and Onana Water. The Alema borehole was connected to Manana’s existing network, boosting their water supply.

Manana customers no longer have to worry about not having water. KIWASH also donated the old pump from the Alema pump house to Onana Water, allowing them to utilize both of their water supplies.

IMPACT

Altogether, 12,000 people are now benefitting from more reliable clean water.

The project has made a big difference for the people in the area. They used to be sick from drinking bad water. Now they are breathing a sigh of relief.

Amwayi thanked God for his emphatic victory saying it was not easy having taken fourth position on day one on Wednesday; I only lost to Mr Okello but the presence of our Governor H.E Sospeter Ojaamong and Deputy Governor Moses Mulomi during the games gave us morale to excel.
“ I urge Kenyan youths to embrace the sport to activate their minds instead of engaging in social misdeeds; Uganda which performed dismally should emulate Kenya which has started scrabble in secondary schools with plans to start it in primary schools next year,” he said.
Willis Ang’awa said Uganda has produced top scrabble players like Philip Mugisha, Richard Gerya, Dr Chris Ntegge and Nyoun Lawrence who have won tournaments in Kenya.
