Director Preventive and Promotive Services Dr Melsah Lutomia addressing the County Nutrition Technical Forum members.

The Busia Health and Sanitation Department has underscored the need for collaborative effort to improve the nutritional status in the County.

The Director Preventive and Promotive Services, Dr Melsah Lutomia said the fight against malnutrition will succeed if stakeholders join hands, bearing in mind that nutrition cuts across all disease interventions.

“Time has come for us to realize that health alone can never manage malnutrition since the factors behind it are so massive,” she said, while addressing members of the County Nutrition Technical Forum (CNTF) at Farm View Hotel in Busia Town.

“If you talk of non-communicable diseases you will require nutritional intervention to improve on hypertension and diabetes, a situation that is similar to communicable diseases like TB and HIV for better management of clients, “she added.

Dr Lutomia who is also the chairperson of the CNTF, appreciated the role played by various partners among them Save the Children International in terms of providing demonstration to locals on how to plant food crops as well as cook and sell some to get money.

The County Nutrition Coordinator Scholastic Nabade said they expect a significant change with various interventions put in place by the implementing partners and county departments among them Health, Agriculture and Education.

Partners present included Save the Children, Nutrition International, the Kenya Red Cross Society Busia Branch, Nutrition In City Ecosystems (NICE) and the Anglican Development Services Western Region.
