BUSIA PLAYERS LEAD KENYA TO EALASCA SCRABBLE TITLE IN KAMPALA

Busia produced three players among top four to lead Kenya to victory in the inaugural (East Africa Local Authorities Sports and Cultural Associations (EALASCA) Scrabble tournament that ended at Mandela National Stadium in Kampala on Thursday.
Stephen Amwayi, Busia County Radiographer based at the County Referral Hospital emerged the top player with nine wins, one loss and a positive spread of 790.
Eric Wamalwa, the County Monitoring and Evaluation Officer was second with eight wins, two losses and a positive spread of 1020; Largus Amukanga who is Tuberculosis coordinator, Teso North Sub County took fourth position with seven wins, three losses and a positive spread of 992.
Willis Ang’awa from Siaya County who finished second during KICOSCA Games in Kericho took third position with eight wins , two losses and a positive spread of 905, Ang’awa’s colleague George Okello completed the top five positions with seven wins, three losses and a positive spread of 827.
Kenyan players took the first 12 position, relegating the first Ugandan, Byaruganga Burhan to position 13 with four wins, six losses and negative spread of 230.
Bernard Gitonga was the best placed County Assemblies Sports Association player at position seven with six wins, four losses and a positive spread of 780.
Amwayi thanked God for his emphatic victory saying it was not easy having taken fourth position on day one on Wednesday; I only lost to Mr Okello but the presence of our Governor H.E Sospeter Ojaamong and Deputy Governor Moses Mulomi during the games gave us morale to excel.
“ I urge Kenyan youths to embrace the sport to activate their minds instead of engaging in social misdeeds; Uganda which performed dismally should emulate Kenya which has started scrabble in secondary schools with plans to start it in primary schools next year,” he said.
Willis Ang’awa said Uganda has produced top scrabble players like Philip Mugisha, Richard Gerya, Dr Chris Ntegge and Nyoun Lawrence who have won tournaments in Kenya.
