After Wednesday’s swearing in of 53 Busia Members of the County Assembly and the election of Speaker and his Deputy, the focus will now be on the election of Majority and Minority Leaders of the Assembly.

Nangina Ward MCA John Obwogo was front runner for the Majority Leader slot before the election of the Speaker that saw the re-election of Bernard Wamalwa.

Obwogo said he has quit the race for the sake of regional balance since he hails Funyula constituency with the Speaker, adding that NASA MCAs will meet on Saturday to decide on the suitable candidate for the seat.

With the battle for the Majority Leader’s seat gaining momentum, five MCAs have shown their intentions to take over from Josephat Wandera of Elugulu Ward who failed to successfully defend his seat, losing to Patrobas Odhiambo.

Those in the race includes Linus Asiba ( Matayos South), Laban Mukhwana (Bukhayo East), Milton Kassamani (Bukhayo Central), Mwajuma Toloi ( Nambale Township) and John Okanga ( Marachi West).

Toloi said she wants to score another first by becoming the Leader of Majority in the Assembly. ” I am optimistic of taking the seat because of being in ODM which enjoys majority in the assembly,” she said.

Asiba who is also gunning for the seat said he is top among equals to capture the seat. ” I am experienced among other candidates by virtue of having worked in the Executive. Others will be learning on the job,” he said.

A cross section of MCAs believe the seat should go to Nambale where three MCAs are contesting while others want it to go to Matayos citing regional balance.
