Ugandan opposition leader Dr Kizza Besigye has described the Supreme Court of Kenya ruling that annulled President Uhuru Kenyatta’s re-election as momentous.
Speaking during a live interview on NTV Uganda on Saturday, Besigye said Ugandans have never seen anything like this. ” The grounds for the annulment of the Kenyan presidential elections was based on the violation of the Constitution and the electoral laws.
Like the Kenyan case, two petitions by the opposition in Uganda in 2001 and 2006 all the Judges were unanimous that there was violation of the constitution and the electoral laws. However, the Judges were divided on what to do with the results which they allowed to stand, to our chagrin,” he said.
With the order to have the repeat of the Presidential elections in Kenya the loser will now get an opportunity of conceding defeat if the polls will be held in a fair and transparent manner.
He said the historic was a confirmation that Kenya has reformed the laws, the constitution and the institutions. This has helped propel the country’s electoral laws to its highest ebb, a feat that should be emulated by African countries including Uganda where President Yoweri Museveni is “illegally” in office.
