BUSIA NEW MAIZE, CASSAVA FLOUR FACTORY TO EMPLOY 60 WORKERS

2 min read

A new maize and cassava flour factory in Busia County will be operational by October, 2019 and it will create job opportunities for 60 unemployed county residents.

The Sh100m factory named Busia Grain Millers situated near the weighbridge in Busia Town is the brainchild of renowned Busia businessman-cum-politician Gilbert Wesonga alias Colagi; it will produce Nguvu Maize and Nguvu Cassava flour varieties.

Addressing the press after attending a funds drive in aid of Sikula Sacco Society Limited at Mundika Primary School on Saturday also attended by Chief Officer for Trade and Cooperatives  Nelson Kwamini,  Colagi said the Buhlar machine model from Germany will undergo one week test runs in September before the official commissioning in October.

The investor said he opted to invest at home instead of the Diaspora to help his beloved county reduce unemployment rate. “I want my fellow Busians to emulate that feat and consider investing at home which has equally good return on investment contrary to their perception,” he said,

He said the plant will produce two tons of flour per hour which translates to 48 tons per day, adding that the County can develop if local investors shun false notion that there are no returns if one opted to invest at home.

County Director Trade Mr Fredrick Naku expressed happiness that one of their own has opted to invest at home, urging other county residents in the diaspora to come and invest at home.

He thanked the National Government for waiving Sh13.5m tax in the spirit of promoting industrialization in the country as per one of President Uhuru Kenyatta’s Big Four Agenda.

The Director told the investor to utilize the tax waiver to use it to boost his business; adding that the County Government under the leadership of H.E Ojaamong has created a conducive climate for potential investors.

Busia Grain Millers will be the second milling plant to operate in the border county after Western Deluxe Maize Millers that was launched by Busia Governor H.E Sospeter Ojaamong in April 2016 with its popular maize flour brand Halisi.

  1. Thumbs up for Colagi. Breaking the jinx. Local investment is a double edged sword; it creates employment to our youth and industrializes/urbanizes our County which at the end of the day increases our County’s GDP.
